Robert Mitchum, the broad shouldered star of some of the greatest noirs of all time (Out of the Past, Angel Face), sees to the tire pressure on his late-1940s Carlton road bike. Hand-built in Nottinghamshire, Carlton Cycles were known for their unique lightweight Reynolds steel frames and intricate chrome lug work. Carltons were especially popular with track and time trial cyclists. Mitchum rode his bike in and around town (note the bike license attached between the seat stays), and even on studio grounds (see this photo on the Rides a Bike archives). Mitchum’s wife, Dorothy, watches as the Hollywood star tends to his wheels. His Carlton boasts a Brooks leather saddle, Cyclo derailleur, Chatter Lea chainwheel, GB wingnuts and top-tube mounted shifter. Mitchum: the epitome of cycling cool.
