Mary Livingstone, wife of film, radio (and later) TV star Jack Benny, performs a side-saddle maneuver on a bike in Palm Springs, with her husband giving a hand. Benny and Livingstone, who took on the show biz moniker Sadie Marks for awhile, were introduced at a Vancouver seder by Benny’s pal Zeppo Marx. Livingstone became a regular on Benny’s top-rated radio show, The Jack Benny Program.
Here’s the September, 1942, snipe (Benny famously owned an old Maxwell automobile): “BEATS THE MAXWELL…. Jack Benny and his (off the air) wife, Mary Livingstone, are getting in some gas-saving bicycling along the paths of the desert oasis of Palm Springs, Cal., before returning to the air Sunday, Oct. 4, over NBC. Dennis Day, Rochester, Don Wilson and Phil Harris’ orchestra rejoin them then.”
