Kirk Douglas and Jan Sterling go ride-sharing on the Paramount Pictures backlot. The two stars topped Billy Wilder’s 1951 newspaper noir, Ace in the Hole (aka The Big Carnival). A commercial failure upon its initial release, it is now considered a classic. In 2017 it was selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
Here’s the snipe: “KIRK DOUGLAS and JAN STERLING double up on a bicycle built for one at the Paramount lot. They recently finished starring roles in ‘Ace in the Hole,” a melodrama of newspapermen and of a desert trader trapped in ancient cave dwellings.”
