Joel McCrea, newly signed to MGM, where he starred in The Jazz Age and The Silver Horde (both 1929), takes two of his studio colleagues — actresses Josephine Dunn (top) and Julia Faye — for a ride. McCrea’s career was just starting: before retiring in the mid-’70s, he would appear in more than 100 films, including classics for the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Preston Sturges, Howard Hawks and Sam Peckinpah. Dunn, a busy ingenue in the Silent Era, successfully transitioned to talkies in the early ’30s. Faye appeared in more than 30 Cecil B. DeMille productions. They are pictured on the sand in Santa Monica.
