Gladys Swarthout, singer, Paramount actress and avid cyclist, on the Atlantic City boardwalk ready to ride. Note the horses on the beach, also ready to ride. The caption, from April, 1935, reads:
“Gladys Swarthout, NBC and Metropolitan Opera singer, was the picture of how the well-dressed woman should look when riding a bicycle, recently in Atlantic City, when she formally dedicated a portion of the Board Walk for the use of cyclists. Her wool skirt and sweater, with a light grey tweed coat, were designed by a prominent New York stylist. After the ceremonies in front of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Miss Swarthout was the first person to try the new bicycle lane.”
