Diane Varsi, in her screen debut, heads for her bike in a scene from the 1957 hit pic, Peyton Place. Shot in the midcoast Maine towns of Belfast, Camden and Rockport, the 20th Century Fox Films release follows the lives of the residents of a fictional New England burg –addressing some controversial topics at the time: homicide, suicide, incest. Varsi, nominated for an Academy Award for her performance, plays a well-to-do high schooler whose best friend (Hope Lange) is raped and impregnated by her alcoholic dad. Varsi went on to star in the Sixties youth rebellion classic Wild in the Streets.
